Rachel's Sigmoidoscopy

For anyone not familiar with the device, a flexible sigmoidoscope consists of the 3-foot-long flexible fiberoptic shown above, connected to controls to make the end snake up, down, right or left. It's connected to a video camera, so the operator can actually see low-res video of the inside of someone's rectum and colon. It's a bit like exploring a cave using a remote-control robot, directing it by what you see outside on a monitor. Here's looking up your old address.

Rachel had suffered from intestinal pain for weeks and a barium enema's results were negative, so her doctor referred her to a lower GI specialist, Dr. Sherman, for a flexible sigmoidoscopy. Rachel does as she's told and gives herself an enema before going to Dr. Sherman's office.

Nurse Sears gives Rachel a thorough examination, including taking her temperature rectally. She then gives Rachel another enema. Dr. Sherman arrives and says Rachel still isn't cleaned out enough for the sigmoidoscope.

Rachel is then put into a leather restraint which draws her legs up so that she can be given an even-larger enema, using a three-foot-long colon tube attached to a hand pump called a Higginson Syringe in England and an Antrim Syringe in the USA.

After expelling her third enema of the day, Rachel is ready for the sigmoidoscope. Right off, she notices that she can see Nurse Sears walking around in the camera's field of view. Dr. Sherman points the end of the device at Rachel's face and we all get our last look at daylight through the device.

As Dr. Sherman inserts the sigmoidoscope into Rachel's bottom, she sees what it sees on the monitor in front of her. And, using a split screen, we bring you, the viewer, a direct feed of the sigmoidoscope's view.

Below are actual video captures of some of the more memorable views as Dr. Sherman takes you on a trip akin to "Fantastic Voyage", but with a decided difference.
